Useful, but not a definative reference
Review date: 2008-07-08 Rating: 8 out of 10
I've recently been working my way through a number of, supposed, Ducati reference materials, trying to farm out information on a specific model and year. In my search it's almost been inevitable that I've purchased and skimmed my way through a number of Ian Falloon's titles, including the 'Desmoquattro Performance Handbook'.
As a returning Ducati enthusiast, I found this a better reference point than the '916' book, and perhaps now feel that my own expectations, from the title need to be re-set.
I'm finding this book far more useful (when compared against the '916' book) as a reference on specifications, parts and standard settings for models of specific type and year.
Given that I cannot challenge Mr Falloon's knowledge, I cannot comment on the depth of the information available or offered within the book, but I would say that it only goes some way in explaining the evolution of the models (i.e. swingarm specifications) and the considerations of the individual, should you wish to develop or modify your own machine.
I concur with the previous review, in that the "Ducati Desmoquatro Performance Handbook" is an interesting and entertaining reference, less dry that I'd expected; but it ccould do with being updated and enhanced with more 'performance' information (I would hoep that the factory are not protective of such information, given that the 916-998 are no logner in competition).
An excellent choice for the road user and trackday bike owner, but perhaps entirely limited for the club racer (it hardly scratches the surface for 'factory' race mdoels).

Ducati Desmoquattro Performance Handbook (Motorbooks Workshop)Review date: 2008-03-25 Rating: 6 out of 10I have quite a few Ian Falloon titles, and rate the author as an enthusiast, knowledgeable profilic writer on motorcycling. As a Ducati enthusiast, I particuarly find his 'Standard Catalog of Ducati Motorcycles' a useful reference - and as such I was looking forward to this 'handbook.' The Ducati Desmoquatro Performance Handbook is interesting and entertaining as a kicking off point and guidebook. But it can be a bit sketchy in some critical areas. As an example: on the subject of suspension and swingarm set-up there was little hard data on critical set up options with various swing arm lengths and rocker adjustment. Generally an entertaining good read, recommended, but falling a little short of a standard reference work for the serious racer.
