A Genuinely Fascinating JourneyReview date: 2010-06-05 Rating: 10 out of 10Peter Moore continues the journey started in Vroom With A View, riding an Orange Vespa Rally round the islands of Sardinia and Sicily and then returning to Livorno through the Italian mainland. It is one of the best travel books that I have read about Italy. Through his choice of transport, Moore has identified a distinctively Italian means of making his journey and one which is greeted with admiration wherever he goes. Moore's descriptions of the countryside he travels through, the buildings he visits and the meals he eats are carefully crafted and left me wishing that I could make a similar journey. Like his other books, it is frequently laced with humour yet he manages to sustain a warm tone whether he is describing tourist souvenirs or ridiculous arguments about change.
It is a very personal journey. As he travels, Moore reflects on becoming a father for the first time, wondering whether it will be the last such journey he will make. When his pregnant wife visits, he recognises the sensitivity with which she is treated and his account of their trip to the Blue Grotto on Capri is as memorable as his description of the moonlit Vespa ride near Pisa.
This is not a book about motorcycling but a fascinating study of Italy by a writer who appreciated just about every stage of his journey.Discovering Italy the Moore way.Review date: 2010-02-23 Rating: 8 out of 10What a shame this looks to be Peter Moore's final book for a while what with his wife expecting a baby around the time this book was written. This is Moore's second book about a trip around Italy on a Vespa. I personally did not enjoy this one as much as I did Vroom with a view but that's not to say this isn't a good read. The reason I have read all his books is because their enjoyable, informative and flow really well. This time round Peter picks up a new orange Vespa with go fast strips and takes it on a trip around Italy's lesser known destinations. Along the way Peter meets many helpful Italians who are always willing to help and welcome him into their life's just because of the Vespa. Marcello as the Vespa is called doesn't cause as many headaches as his first Vespa Sophia which allows Peter a much smoother trip this time round. I really enjoy the way Peter always provides facts and interesting information about the towns and Cities he stops at and this books does just that. The book has a very good ending with Peter taking part in a Vespa rally that he is invited to take part in by the Italians who have taken him and Marcello to their hearts. If you want a bit of Dolce Vita in your life this and Vroom with a view are the books for you. Enjoy.a vroom with a viewReview date: 2010-01-19 Rating: 10 out of 10Like the author I too was fascinated by scooters when I was a young man, in fact 50 years ago I owned a little Lambretta and have very fond memories of myself tootling round the town on my brave little machine.
It was, therefore, not too surprising that, having retired and sold my beloved car, that my mind turned to memories of the fun I had on my scooter all those decades ago and so I bought a new one only to discover that much of the fun that I remembered was probably more the result of being 20 years old than the existence of the scooter: never the less, and making allowance for the rosy tint that time lends memory, I still have fun on my new toy.
With this in my past the discovery that Peter had written a book about his adventures on a little machine purchased for similar reasons I bought the book and found it delightful. His sense of fun and refusal to mind looking silly added to a charming travel tale of Italy. He differed from me in one major respect, he is young enough still to have a pretty companion behind him for some of his journey just I had all those years ago: I knew there was a reason that I remembered that little Lambretta so fondly. Not great. Sorry Peter!Review date: 2010-01-08 Rating: 4 out of 10A few other people have said the same - it's too much like the last one - which I enjoyed very much. I kind of felt this may have been written more out of the need for sales than passion. It felt as the Italian tourist board financed it.. I would give it a miss unless you LOVE Vespa and want to have a very idealistic view of Italy. I've lived here in Italy for 8 years so know it isn't always such a fairy story when you travel around.
I also felt there were some hugely boring historical facts and then in Pompeii just Brit/Aus moaning. Pompeii is amazing if you bother to do a little research. Travel writing has always been about adventure and the pioneer spirit (read Ted Simon) but it seems the worst thing that happened on this trip was some bloke in the south scratched the paint changing a speedo cable, and we were expected to be convinced it was a disaster.
Sorry! Thought it was without passion, lack-luster writing (compared to his usual stuff) and just following a lucky bloke on his holiday that we helped finance. Surely we could all do that?! Soon as the snow clears I'm off!
