This one has a bit of a misfire...Review date: 2008-06-16 Rating: 6 out of 10First things first, I own and have read a number of books by Ian Falloon and I've been very impressed by his writing, both in depth and style, in the past. I don't know if that qualifies me or gives a certain bias when I review this title.
I approached buying this book as a sort of finishing touch to understanding the history of Ducati motorcycles and being able to piece together more information about the machine that I own. There certainly is depth to the book, with nice little details, that help pull together an understanding of the different models, their development and their place in either on the road or in racing. What you might want to consider though, is that this has been written as a 'read-through' book and not a catalogue or reference book. I can't really criticise it as such, but it is very difficult to pick out information about specific models or variations, without reading through a number chapters and trying to piece in all together in your head.
My particular interest was in finding out as much as possibel about the early 916 Strada, but found the information scattered around in a number of different sections. I couldn't quite understand if the book was focusing on race bikes, road bikes or even the timeline of events at the factory, but I personally would have found a sectiob by section reading of each model much easier.
That's not to say that this doesn't make an excellent read. There plenty of fresh images and it does represent really good value.
One last niggle though, is a number of 'reversed' pictures. It means that the payout of the pages looks great, but when you're actually looking to get any information or detail from a picture is a real pest.
So, although I liked this book, it is let down in a number of areas by simply not being as good as it could have been.
